the little city of Nieuwpoort

On the right you see Nieuwpoort, the tiny fortress city on the river Lek. This river is in the upper part of the picture. The dam is right in the middle near the letter A, the Lek dike runs horizontally through the centre of the city. The one remaining "beer" is on the right, on the Eastern end of the city.
The canal around the city originally had an open connection with the river Lek so that the water in the outer part of the canal went up and down with the level in the river.
 

The "beer" of Nieuwpoort can be seen in the distance. The picture is taken from the ramparts on the Eastern boundary.
